Hollywood, 1969: Actor Rick Dalton, famous for his lead role in the Western TV series “Bounty Law”, fears that his career is coming to an end. The transition from TV star to cinema is not that easy and lately all he is ever offered are guest roles as the villain who gets beaten up by the good guy in the end. Rick’s stunt double, best friend, and chauffeur, Cliff Booth, shares his fate. He has always had a hard time getting jobs because of the rumours about him killing his own wife. Additionally, he seems to have a knack for picking fights with the wrong people. Rick hopes for a social ascent by making friends with his new neighbours, the successful director Roman Polanski and his young and beautiful wife Sharon Tate, but he hardly ever gets a glimpse of them. Meanwhile, Cliff makes the acquaintance of a young hippie who later turns out to be a member of the Charles Manson Family. When Rick and Cliff finally part ways, they do so after one last night of getting completely drunk together – a night that they are going to remember for a long time.
As one might expect from Mr. Tarantino’s previous films, his new one is violent as well as tender, plus terrifically funny. Yet this virtuoso piece of storytelling also offers intricate instruction on the pervasiveness of violence in popular culture. (Wall Street Journal)
