A family and a murder

The successful murder mysteries author Harlan Thromby is found dead on the morning after his 85th birthday. What has happened? Apparently his whole family was there on the evening of his birthday for a party and even more apparently everybody has something to hide. It turns out Harlan spoke to all of them confidentially on this very evening and every single person in his family seems to have a motive. But of course nobody is the murderer of their beloved (and very wealthy) head of family.

The police start to assume that it was a suicide but then the famous private detective Benoit Blanc is hired under likewise mysterious circumstances and starts his investigation. The best help he has is the nurse Marta Cabrera who seems to be the only person not profiting from the death of her patient. But can she really help him unravel the mystery lying over this family? Or might it all be completely different than it seems? A construct of lies waits to be let lose.

An entertainment that’s as smart, witty, stylish and exhilarating as any movie lover could wish for. (Wall Street Journal)

It knew what genre it was taking on and it simultaneously achieved greatness in that, but also fully meta parodied it at the same time. (Movie Bitches)
