Some wounds only art can reach.

When their mother dies, sisters Nora and Agnes are brought back to the family home they grew up in — and back into the orbit of their father, Gustav, a once-celebrated film director who walked out on them years ago. His reappearance at the funeral is uninvited and awkward, but Gustav has not come empty-handed. He has written a new script, his hoped-for comeback, and he wants Nora — an accomplished stage actress — to play the lead. She refuses.

Undeterred, Gustav casts an eager young Hollywood star in her place and turns the beloved family house into his film set, drawing everyone deeper into a drama that blurs the line between art and unfinished personal history. As the shoot progresses, old grievances resurface, silences speak louder than words, and it becomes increasingly clear that Gustav's film is not just a story — it is an attempt to work through something he has never known how to say out loud. Whether cinema can do what he could not as a father is the question the film quietly, and movingly, refuses to answer too easily.

Deftly exploring the uneasy tension between artistic expression and personal connection, Sentimental Value is a bracingly mature work — marvelously acted across the board. (Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus)
