Everyone in his way is just the next opponent.

New York, 1952. Marty Mauser is a wiry, fast-talking young man from the Lower East Side, scraping by in his uncle's shoe store while nursing a dream nobody around him takes seriously: becoming America's greatest table tennis player. Convinced that his talent is undeniable and the world simply hasn't caught up yet, Marty hustles his way from neighbourhood basements to tournament halls, leaving a trail of burned bridges and bewildered onlookers in his wake.

His journey takes him from the gritty tenements of Manhattan to London and ultimately to a climactic showdown in Tokyo, with ambition and catastrophe never far apart. Along the way he charms, alienates, and manoeuvres through a colourful cast of friends, rivals, and people willing to finance his outsized dreams — at least until he pushes them too far. Loosely inspired by the real-life ping-pong sensation Marty Reisman, this is a film about a man who believes confidence is currency, and spends it recklessly.

Timothée Chalamet is electrifying — it's both mesmerizing and maddening to watch this arrogant table-tennis prodigy ricochet from high to low, in a riveting study of a man who fully believes in his own greatness. (Peter Debruge, Variety)
