“I don’t care, I’m still free, you can’t take the sky from me”

During the 26th century, humanity has left the overpopulated Earth to colonize a new solar system. There they have many planets and moons at their disposal. The inner planets, rich with water and lush greens, are the core members of the “Alliance” who won against the rebellious independent outer planets, that are struggling more with their environment.

Against her will, River Tam is conditioned by Alliance scientists to be an operative with special powers. After being rescued by her brother Simon they find refuge aboard Serenity. But because River had an opportunity to glean highly confidential data, they are searched for by an operative of the Alliance.

After another highly dangerous job of Serenity’s crew, a commercial triggers River to go berserk and sets off a search for the secrets locked within her head, while at the same time avoiding capture by the operative.

Joss Whedon makes a rousing feature-directing debut, exploiting the cult status of his short-lived series Firefly to continue it on the big screen. (Chicago Reader)

Taut, immersive, and alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, a well-balanced blend of whooping Wild West action and space opera. (AV Club)
