Millions of years ago, a tribe of apes stumbles upon a mysterious object. This object is a featureless dark monolith and happens to trigger a process of evolution which leads humanity to a future, which is seemingly only the blink of an eye – or in this case, the toss of a bone – away.

The story told is the one of the United States spacecraft Discovery One and its mission to Jupiter. Not only is Discovery One operated by an extremely competent crew, but also by a HAL 9000 computer which is – according to its own statement – “foolproof and incapable of error”.

But is it truly? And is humankind supposed to follow the AI’s lead? Which kind of intelligence should take control over Discovery’s mission regarding other monoliths within the universe and where is HAL’s loyalty truly rooted? Soon, a conflict arises that addresses these questions and it comes to a dangerous statement: “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that … ”.
