The ocean is calling

The small tribe on the island of Motunui is in trouble: the plants are dying, and the fishermen can’t catch any fish any longer. The reason for this is a curse originating from an ancient wrong: a long time ago, so the old tale goes, super-cool tattooed demigod Maui, whose weapon is a huge magical fishhook, has stolen the mystical heart of Te Fiti, the goddess who brought life to the ocean.

Moana, the courageous and forward-thinking daughter of the chief of the tribe – defying her father’s veto – decides to set off for the open sea on her small sailing boat together with her dopey pet rooster to return Te Fiti’s heart and save her tribe.

A journey full of exciting and colourful adventures begins – a journey, on which Moana needs to get along with demigod Maui, find her own identity and live up to the leadership position for which she was destined as the daughter of the chief.

The details in these production numbers are just decadent; the colors are a million shades of green blue, and the underwater creatures and settings have a wonderfully immersive, tactile quality. (rogerebert.com)

An absolute delight, a lush, exuberant quest fable full of big musical numbers and featuring perhaps the most stunning visuals of any Disney film to date. (theatlantic.com)
