Only after his wife Lynne (Amy Adams) issues an ultimatum to get his life together, Yale dropout Richard "Dick" Cheney (Christian Bale) overcomes his former drinking habits and manages to get a job as an intern in the White House under Nixon's economic adviser Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell). Not very charismatic but determined he manages to expand his skyrocketing political career. Surviving the Watergate scandal and a heart attack, he rises through the ranks step by step until he finds himself in the post of Secretary of Defense under George Bush Senior. It seems as if he has reached the peak of his career - but when George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell) offers him to become his running mate and Vice President, it shows that fate has yet greater and more terrible plans for him. It is [-in] the Aftermath of 9/11 that prompts Cheney to pull the strings and reshape the country and the globe in ways that would effect the world up to this day.
"It's an ugly story of corruption, which wears a clown mask to make its horrors more palatable. And it works, both as a comedy and a scathing indictment of Cheney" - Detroit News
