When eight armed members of the Palestinian terrorist organization “Black September” attacked the Israeli team's quarters during the Olympic Games in Munich on September 5, 1972, the sports team of the US channel ABC heard gunshots at 4:40 in the morning. The longest broadcast in television history begins in front of the largest television audience of all time. The attackers kill two of the Israeli athletes and take the other nine hostage. Their demand: the release of over two hundred Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. Against the broadcaster's resistance, the ABC sports team takes over live coverage via satellite and reports on the hostage-taking for 22 hours. A tragedy unfolds before the eyes of the viewers, in which the misconduct of the police and politicians is partly responsible for the deaths of all the hostages at Fürstenfeldbruck airfield.
So tautly directed that you can practically feel the panic-sweat trickling down the back of your own neck. (Wendy Ide - Observer (UK))
