During World War II, the British military assembles the most intelligent and talented mathematicians and scientists in Bletchley Park. Their purpose: crack the code of the Enigma, the famous machine which the Germans use to encipher their military radio messages. Alan Turing is one of those brilliant minds. In school he is bullied for being different. His only friend, Christopher, helps him discover his interest in cryptography. Turing develops feelings for him, but never gets the chance to confess his love. Turing has to keep his homosexuality a secret as it is considered a crime in Great Britain during that time. After college, he soon evolves to be one of the leading mathematicians of his country, mainly because of his theories about computers. This is also the main reason why he gets recruited to Bletchley Park, despite his arrogance and social awkwardness. Turing continues to be the misfit of the team. Everyone else tries to crack the daily radio message, but he believes in a different approach: a crypto-analytical machine which could accelerate the search for the daily keys. But his superiors are less than thrilled with this idea.
The Imitation Game both brings to life and pays tribute to Turing’s history-altering and pioneering work that paved the way for modern computing. (FromTheBalcony)
